Vizio uses Windows 8 for its 11-inch tablet Vizio uses Windows 8 for its 11-inch tablet(0)

Vizio is a relatively new entrant in the PC space and is already making its presence felt. The retailer has taken a unique approach with the announcement of their standalone Windows 8 tablet called MT 11X-A1. Unlike this move from Vizio, all of the Windows 8 tablet-styled devices available so far are more like laptops that fold into quasi-slates. We also have a few hybrid devices whose displays can be separated from the bodies.
But other than mere physical size and display types, the new Vizio device also differs from the previous Windows 8 tablets in several other ways. Windows 8 tablet-styled devices released so far, hybrids as well as convertibles, have been running on Intel Core i-series or Atom processors. Unlike these devices, the 11.6-inch system offered by Vizio is equipped with a low-power AMD Z60.
Resolution of this new device would be 1,920x,1080 pixels, which seems perfect for the Windows 8 tile user interface. However, using this resolution on a traditional Windows desktop computers running Windows 8 might not be an altogether easy experience, particularly when we consider that Windows 8 is significantly different from all the previous versions of Windows OS.
A few technical specifications of this special tablet from Vizio include 2GB of RAM memory, 64GB SSD and a weight of 1.7 pounds. Remaining technical specs would be clear with the passage of time. Considering that this device comes with a low-power AMD processor and smaller SSD, price factor would be important for it. But so far there are no details regarding the price or exact release date of the device.
This move from Vizio is quite interesting and would determine the future course of the retailer with respect to Windows devices. Windows tablets have proven to be quite successful in the market during the first few months, although exact sales figures have not been released by Microsoft. During the holiday season, it was announced by Microsoft that due to the high demand for the tablet, the company has decided to increase its production. The company also converted many temporary tablet stores into permanent stores, due to the increased demand for the devices. Let’s see how this year turns out to be for Windows 8 devices.

Rumors regarding the release of an Office version for iPad from Microsoft Rumors regarding the release of an Office version for iPad from Microsoft(0)

We have been long hearing rumors about Microsoft releasing an Office version for iPad, iPhone and even Android based devices, but so far any such thing has not materialized. Microsoft has denied such news but still there are various tech sources that are claiming that such a thing would certainly happen in near future. According to the unknown sources form Office sales team, the iPad version of the software would be announced by Microsoft during the SharePoint conference in November.

Microsoft, on the other hand, might have a few reservations about such a release. The company would launch Windows 8 in October which would be the first version of Windows to run solely on ARM based tablets. With such a launch, Microsoft would be in direct competition with Apple since Apple is the king of tablets market. Microsoft would certainly not like to release anything that would further improve the position of Apple and the release of Office for iPad would do just that. Although Office for iPad would generate a stable revenue stream, it can also result in the destruction of new Windows RT, Microsoft’s first true venture into tablets computing.

A clear fact is that the launch of Office for Apple App Store would result in 30 percent cut for Apple and hence would clearly benefit Apple. Besides, Microsoft also intends to make the next-generation Office compatible with the Cloud services, and iCloud service seems to be an inevitable obstacle. Microsoft wants to synchronize the desktop files with cloud based SkyDrive, but SkyDrive already exists for an application for the iPad. In the end, it might be difficult, if not impossible, for Microsoft to circumvent iCloud altogether and force its own option. This hurdle is certainly something that can prevent Microsoft from launching the iPad version of Office.

Apple would not be able to do anything effective if Microsoft decides to undercut Apple and bring Office to a rival platform. But if Microsoft takes it to Apple App Store and is vetoed by Apple, it would be an anti-competitive move and Apple would certainly not like to get entangled in another anti-trust lawsuit, since it is already facing such a lawsuit regarding the prices of the eBooks. Anyways, hopefully the situation would be clear within the next few months and we would find out whether Office is coming to iPad or not.

Acer announced a Windows 8 based tablet during Computex trade show Acer announced a Windows 8 based tablet during Computex trade show(0)

Acer has become one of the very first tech giants to officially announce a Windows 8 based tablet, although such initiatives are expected from several other manufacturers in near future. The announcement was made during the Computex trade show in Taipei. Acer has previously announced two Windows 8 tablets that would be shipped during the fall of this year. However, so far Acer has not given out any official information regarding the technical specs, price or exact release date of the tablet. Previously we also have a Windows 7 based tablet from Acer known as Iconia Tab W500, where the W indicated Windows. For Android based tablets form Acer, we find the subscript A. With the Windows 8 tablet, however, there won’t be any more “Tab” with the name of the device.

The names of these two Windows 8 based tablets form Acer are Iconia W510 and the Iconia W700, and both of them have Intel x86 architecture. This architecture would allow the tablets to run Windows 8 in full mode, including the desktop mode. So far, only very little information is know regarding the technical specs of the devices. All we know is that Acer Iconia W510 would have a display size of 10.1 inch and a screen resolution of 1280 by 800 pixels. The tablet, just like the previous W500, would have a detachable clamshell keyboard dock. This would also result in an extended battery life, which can go to as many as 18 hours with Windows 8 running.

The other tablet named Iconia W700, which is also being called the “Performance” Windows 8 tablet, seems particularly interesting. This would be an 11.6 inch tablet having a screen resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels which makes it much better compared to most Android tablets available in the market at present. This unique tablet would come with multipurpose dock, and users would be able to tilt the display up to 70 degrees. Besides, this device would have 3 USB ports onboard for added facility.

So far information regarding the exact release date or price of these tablets is not known. However, it is expected that the price would fall somewhere between $400 and $800 for W510 and $800 to $1000 for W700. The price is slightly lower than Samsung Series 7 Slate, although there is not much of a difference. But overall, it would certainly be great to test a Windows 8 based tablet in near future.

Dell is planning to release another tablet in near future Dell is planning to release another tablet in near future(0)

Dell does not have a very good experience with tablets, even though its history as a manufacturer of personal computers is remarkable. Previously, Dell released its 5 inch tablet with the name of Streak tablet which could not attract much attention. Besides, the tablet was also criticized by many people due to some functionality issues. This is the only tablet from Dell so far and comes with Android operating system. At present, Dell is not selling this tablet any more, although it can be purchased from third party retailers. But it seems that Dell has not given up and is planning to release another tablet in near future. According to Steve Felice, the chief commercial officer of Dell, the company would be releasing an 8 inch tablet in near future. This tablet would be running Windows 8 since the initial reception of Windows 8 is very high and positive. Besides, the touch interface that accompanies Windows 8 is compatible with a variety of different products.

Even though Dell has not been able to make a mark in the market of tablets, it is still a huge name when it comes to the development of personal desktops and laptops. At present, Dell is the third largest manufacturer of personal computers, after HP and Lenovo. The new tablet, however, would be announced in the second half of 2012 and most probably we would see it in the market in early 2013. One of the main aims of this tablet, according to Dell, would be to incorporate the common and commercial requirements, since the workers in the IT departments of the companies are fed up of doing such incorporation for the employees, which also results in a lot of overhead. Right now there are several serious issues such as security, compatibility, device management etc. and tackling all these issues from a single device is certainly a huge task, and Dell intends to undertake such as task in the new tablet. Besides, Dell still believes there is a lot of room for innovation and improvement in the market of the tablets, since the processing power and typing facilities in the tablets are still not as good as conventional computers. Dell would possibly also bring forward some ideas to cover the gap that exists between conventional computers and tablets on this front.

Microsoft has been working on Windows Phone 8 under the name of Apollo Microsoft has been working on Windows Phone 8 under the name of Apollo(0)

According to the rumors and leaks associated with Windows 8, it appears that Microsoft is working on an operating system that would work equally efficiently on PCs, smart phones, tablets and other entertainment devices. If this actually happens, it would certainly be a huge achievement but there are also certain risks that are associated with such a move. Microsoft has been working on Windows Phone 8 under the name of Apollo and the noteworthy aspect is that various critical features of this OS such as kernel and networking stack and other security features are hired from Windows 8, instead of Windows Phone 7. This clearly shows that the rumors of releasing a unified operating system do carry weight.

So far, Microsoft has not released any kind of refutation of these rumors and if they actually turn out to be true, there are various features that this new operating system would showcase which were missing from the previous versions. The new OS would have support for C/C++ programming, multi-core processors, multi-resolution and external devices such as microSD cards. According to resources, during the code writing process of Windows Phone 8, developers would be able to reuse the code of Windows 8.So if we are about to have a unified OS from Microsoft, this would certainly mean a clear edge over the competitors such as Google and Apple. An attraction for developers would be that the applications developed for this platform would present no or little porting problems when it comes to porting these apps between different devices. There are just 60,000 apps for Windows Phone devices compared to some 500,000 apps for Apple devices and 300,000 apps for Android devices. But if a unified OS is achieved, the app development process for Windows Phone devices would considerably accelerate.

But of course, Microsoft would have to be extremely careful throughout the development and launch process of any such OS. Microsoft is already not in a very good position in the market of mobile devices and if such a move fails, it could prove to be disastrous. There have been certain hardware problems as well. Microsoft has announced that ARM-based Windows 8 tablets would not be able to run the legacy Windows Apps. Besides, Intel has also announced that Windows 8 devices having processors other than those of Intel would not be able to provide a perfect computing experience. However, we can’t say anything for sure just at this moment and would have to wait and see how Microsoft tackles with all these risks.

However, the pioneer in the field of smartphones and tablets, Apple, would not be present at the show since Apple has not been attending CES since 2009. We would be seeing a lot of cutting edge gadgets and products during this event that would continue for three days. HD TVs, latest tablets, mobile phones and other products by the technology giants and market leaders would be showcased and common people attending the show would be able to have hands on experience of these devices.

Microsoft has also been planning to showcase some important products such as Xbox, Windows 8 and Windows Mobile during this event. A noteworthy aspect in relation to Microsoft is that the mobile manufacturer partner of Microsoft, Nokia, is also holding a news media event at CES. Nokia would also introduce its new line of Windows Mobile based devices during the event. But probably the most exciting aspect of this event would be a wide range of Android based devices, including latest tablets and smartphones from all price ranges and technical specs. During the last couple of years, there has been an immense progress in the field of technology generally and in the field of mobile devices particularly. So we should be expecting to see some high tech gadgets and previously unseen devices during this remarkable tech event. During 2012, we are expecting the release of some of the best devices from tech giants including Apple, Microsoft, Google and others. So we can safely regard this event to be the best CES event organized so far, even though we would be missing the participation of Apple and hence the coveted Apple products.

Samsung tablet running with Microsoft Windows 8 Samsung tablet running with Microsoft Windows 8(0)

Samsung has already earned high respect and repute in the market of tablet devices. After successfully releasing a couple of tablet devices in various sizes, Samsung now intends to release another innovative tablet device running Microsoft’s Windows 8. Previous tablets released by Samsung were running on Android. According to the reports, this latest device would be displayed in the next week’s Microsoft’s BUILD developers conference. This would be quite an event since in past, there was been no example of collaboration between Samsung and Microsoft on a tech project.

This collaboration would be good for both Samsung and Microsoft, particularly Microsoft would reap huge benefits in collaboration with a firm that is not only one of the technology giants of the world, but has also attained high position in the market of tablet devices and smartphones in quite a limited time. Although Samsung has mainly released tablets and smartphones running various versions of Android OS, it has also utilized other platforms such as Windows Phone 7 as well as its own Bada OS. But needless to say, Android has been the most successful of these all. It appears that Samsung is planning to give more and more support to other platforms since recently Google has purchased Motorola worth $12.5 billion.

Microsoft has very recently released its Windows 8 which is famously considered a blend of a tablet OS and a common desktop OS. Microsoft was in a terrible need to have some hardware partner to support the OS on the devices. Samsung has finally come to the rescue of Microsoft and this seems to be a huge advantage for Microsoft. Previously, there were news that Microsoft might be releasing its own version of a tablet device running Windows 8 which would be a competitor of iPad2, but now it is expected that this new device would be a Samsung device running Windows 8. Microsoft has given a short demonstration of Windows 8 and it appears that this OS would be containing a Metro UI which was also the part of Windows Phone 7. With the move of collaborating with Samsung and releasing Windows 8, Microsoft is certainly gearing up for the competition. But final word can be said only after the device is released and tested by the experts.

This tablet device from Samsung running Windows 8 is still in production phase and would most probably be released in the fall of next year.

Windows 8 Taking Different Direction from the Rest of the Industry Windows 8 Taking Different Direction from the Rest of the Industry(0)

Windows 8 is just beginning to build its path towards tablets but as Smartphones and other tablets focused on developing feature-packed devices; Windows 8 is trying to make desktop OS work on mobiles. In this sense, Windows 8 will be running on ARM which would need ARM specific application such that the tablet could run Microsoft Excel or Microsoft Word. However, aside from the concerns regarding people’s choice and sustainability of the product, it was also shown that the Windows 8 technical specification is just like the previous Windows Phone 7.

About two years ago, the Windows Phone 7 has been known to be powered in OLED screen boasting Windows features like good photo background in which tools and applications appear in thumbnails before a self customized home screen. It also features the six hubs which are the Music and video, Pictures, Games, People, Office and Marketplace that people commonly access on.
